One of the great strengths of amateur radio is that so much of the infrastructure we rely on is designed, built, maintained and improved by dedicated volunteers. Across Australia, countless hours are contributed by individuals and clubs to ensure repeaters, digital networks and communications systems continue to serve the amateur radio community. The South Australian Repeater Group (SARG) is a shining example of what can be achieved through volunteer effort and a shared passion for the hobby.
Among its many initiatives, SARG hosts a Wednesday evening net at 8:00 pm local time on the Adelaide Linked Repeater Network, providing members and visitors with an opportunity to keep in touch, discuss technical topics and strengthen the amateur radio community. Behind the scenes, volunteers are also developing the group's new website at https://sarg.au/, which will continue to grow as a central source of news, technical information and membership details.
The group's technical volunteers have also been hard at work expanding Adelaide's MeshCore network. Thanks to the efforts of Nathan VK5OG and many other volunteers, 26 MeshCore repeaters are now operating across the Adelaide Plains and surrounding regional areas. This work has been undertaken in collaboration with fellow amateur radio organisations including AHARS and AREG, with the latest repeater recently installed at the AREG site on Koch Hill.
These achievements demonstrate the value of volunteer-led organisations within amateur radio. Whether maintaining repeater systems, deploying new digital technologies, hosting regular nets or sharing technical knowledge, volunteers continue to provide services that benefit the entire amateur radio community.

SARG NEWS Update 21st June
Last Wednesday the 17th June at 20.00hrs local time the first inaugural South Australian Repeater Group radio net was held utilising the Adelaide Linked Repeater Network and it was fantastic having so many operators coming in and participating in the net which made the net so successful for all participants and the South Australian Repeater Group.
The net will be conducted on a weekly basis and will be hosted by a group of operators within the group which will bring new ideas, variety etc to the airwaves.
We are utlising the Adelaide Linked Repeater Network as our membership base is so broad and spread out across Adelaide and it regions, so what better way than give everyone the chance to join in on the radio net utilising the Linked Repeater Network.
The South Australian Repeater Group is planning in the future to also host the net on a Multi-Mode Repeater and this will give operators with digital capabilities opportunity to also participate in the net using digital formats.
We would love to hear you all up on the net this coming Wednesday 24th June at 20.00hrs and you don’t need to be a member of the group to participate as everyone with an amateur radio licence is welcome to come up and participate on the net.
Some great news is that the VK5RDF Digital Multi Mode repeater is being recommissioned in the very near future and that will assist with Digital Coverage across Adelaide due to its location, stay tuned for further details.
The VK5ROF Digital / WIRES X Repeater which is hosted by members of the group and is located at Meadows and supported by Paul VK5YY on his farm property is functioning well and is providing great digital coverage across the Southern Suburbs and Fleurieu Peninsula.
The UHF / VHF Field day contest is on this weekend so don’t forget to get on air and assist AREG with contacts and numbers.
VK5OG Nathan and other members of the group have been busy with updating Mech Core Repeaters across Adelaide and working with other like-minded ham radio clubs of AHARS and AREG and this weekend a new Meshcore Repeater will be installed at the AREG site at Koch Hill.
The Executive Members of the group are continuing on developing and creating an exciting and informative web page for the group which now is online and can be found at the web address SARG.AU, the web page is not fully complete at this point and as such changes will continue to me made in its development and information, have a look at the page, and I say again that the address is SARG.AU.
You can also follow the South Australian Repeater Group on our Facebook page which contains lots of exciting news, announcements, activities, and information on becoming a member along with the online membership registration form for you to become a member if you wish too.
The South Australian Repeater Group now has over 50 members and it is pleasing that so many amateur radio operators are wanting to be involved in this dynamic group and moving forward with technology in amateur radio.
